Black cardamom is used more commonly in savory dishes. It has a smoky flavor which comes from the method of drying on a flame which also lends it a distinct aroma. This dried fruit is sold both as pods and seeds where the pods carry a higher flavor.

Black Cardamom also known as Moti Elaichi, Large Cadamom, Brown Cardamom, Cardamom pods, Fat Cardamoms. 

The pods are used as a spice, in a similar manner to the green Indian cardamom pods, but those have a different flavor. Unlike green cardamom, this spice is rarely used in sweet dishes. Its smoky flavor and aroma derive from traditional methods of drying over open flames. Black cardamom is better for hearty meat stews and similar meat dishes.
